The Thai-EU FTA talks include a proposal for Thailand to align its plant variety law with UPOV 1991. Critics (BIOTHAI) say this would limit farmers' right to save seed for replanting and could remove Thailand's own conditions on genetic resources. A Rangsit University analysis estimates that a 50% rise in key seed prices could add up to 1,000 baht per rai to farmer costs, with effects passing to rice mills, feed, sugar, cassava and food prices. No law has been passed yet. Watch the negotiation outcome if you buy seed, feed or inputs, or sell into these chains.
