At least six Chinese commercial banks have been permitted to add the baht, among about a dozen currencies, to direct yuan settlement. For exporters and importers trading with China, this could cut dollar conversion steps, payment time and fees, but only if banks offer competitive rates. The Thai National Shippers' Council says firms should pick the settlement currency per transaction, weighing partner, cost structure, revenue and expense currencies, and hedging costs. If you receive yuan and need baht quickly, compare exchange rates and fees first. Nothing changes immediately; ask your bank whether it offers baht-yuan settlement and what it charges.

A Thammasat University study (conducted 2023) proposes school design changes to reduce casualties in attacks by lone offenders: stronger perimeter fences, landscaping or moats to slow intruders, clustered buildings, staggered corridors, extra escape windows, and hiding spaces. The study is a proposal only, with no mandatory rules announced. It urges the Education Ministry and Office of the Basic Education Commission to add active-assailant drills alongside fire drills. For a school owner, the practical step is to watch for any ministry safety rules and consider adding this to emergency planning.

The Department of Highways, with the Engineering Institute of Thailand (EIT), load-tested the M82 elevated motorway (Bang Khun Thian–Ekachai–Bang Phae) under legal truck loads, following AASHTO standards, and reports responses within set criteria. The route opens to traffic on 28 August 2026. If your delivery or logistics routes use this corridor, plan to use it from that date and check travel times again once traffic settles. No other action is needed.

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit East Nusa Tenggara province in Indonesia on 15 August 2026, killing at least 53 people and injuring more than 130, with about 5,000 people evacuated. Rescue teams of over 3,500 soldiers and police are searching rubble, and PLN says most power has been restored. For Thai SMEs, there is no direct cost or regulatory change; it matters only if you import or export through Indonesia or have supply links there, where shipping or logistics delays are possible.

Washington is considering tougher economic measures against Iran. No article text was available, so the direct impact on Thai businesses is not yet clear; watch for any effect on oil prices and fuel costs.

The baht fell to about 33.8 per dollar in July, its weakest in over a year, then recovered to around 33.0 in early August as the dollar eased. Kasikorn's dealing room says the rebound may not last: September has seasonally been a strong-dollar month, Jackson Hole in late August is a risk, and Thailand's twin deficits (current account and fiscal) keep pressure on the baht. Their end-2026 forecast is 33.80. If you pay for imports or dollar-priced inputs, or earn in dollars, review your hedging and pricing for the back half of the year rather than assuming the current level holds.

The Transport Ministry will submit the southern double-track rail project (534 km, Chumphon to Padang Besar) to a cabinet meeting in Songkhla on 1 September 2026. The first phase, about 504 km costing 106,798 million baht, is planned to start construction around July 2027, with the Hat Yai-Songkhla 30 km section deferred. Bidding terms and four civil-works contracts are next. For SMEs in the south, this is a medium-term opportunity in logistics, construction supply and border trade, not an action item this quarter.

EV registrations hit 147,571 in the first seven months of the year, but 6-month sales of 106,115 were mostly imports (over 70%). Imported EVs pay 10% excise tax versus 2% for locally assembled ones, and the auto industry association (TAIA) is pressing government for tax balance. EV parts use far fewer components than combustion vehicles, and many are imported, so suppliers should expect pressure as EV volume grows. Watch for any policy change on the excise gap; no change has been announced in this column.

A peat swamp fire in Phru Khuan Khreng, Nakhon Si Thammarat, has burned about 300 rai in Cha-uat district and is affecting seven villages on the edge. Officials expect it to be under control within a few days unless strong wind returns, and a helicopter is surveying its extent. For Thai SMEs in the south, the practical impact is possible smoke and air quality issues, and some disruption to local travel or deliveries near Cha-uat. No action is needed beyond staying alert to official updates.

A US report (The Great Transshipment Scam, released 13 Aug 2026) puts Thailand in Tier 2 for possible Chinese transshipment, alongside Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey and Vietnam. It does not mean Thailand is found guilty, and it is not a new tax. But US customs (CBP) may use it to screen exporters, importers, factories and shipping routes, asking for more origin documents. The article estimates THB 172,000-345,000 million of exports in 8 sectors could face closer checks. If you export to the US, keep traceable records from supplier to raw material and component, and confirm that the importer of record has them.

The Department of Older Persons issued a 2026 (BE 2569) notice setting the framework for elderly schools, so local administrations (อปท.) can run them without fear of being told it is outside their remit. A Thai Chulalongkorn-style academic from Thammasat warns that not every area needs one, that programmes need steady budgets and buildings, and that a shortage of nurses, care managers and social workers will limit expansion. For a private SME this is mainly a signal: elderly-care demand is growing, and local councils may become partners or customers for activity, care or venue services. No action is required now.

From 21 Aug 2026, M6 Bang Pa-in to Pak Chong is free on weekends only (Fri 12:00 to Sun 24:00), 4-wheel cars only, max 80 km/h, through 5 toll gates. There is no fuel station or EV charger on the route, so fill up or charge first. From 28 Aug 2026 (10:00), M82 Bang Khun Thian to Ban Phaeo (about 25 km) is free 24 hours, open to cars, trucks and buses, with 4 gates initially. Trucks and buses are capped at 65 km/h. If you run deliveries or staff trips on Friendship Highway or Rama 2, check the schedule before you change routes. Information line: 1586.

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake on Indonesia's Flores island killed 48 people and damaged around 914 houses plus schools and health facilities. Aid is arriving by helicopter and ship. For a Thai business, there is no direct action needed; it matters only if you source goods or staff from eastern Indonesia, where logistics may be disrupted for a while.

Iran says the Strait of Hormuz stays closed and the US plans new economic measures next week, with no deal in sight. Kpler counted only 2 ships transiting on Friday, against more than 130 a day before the war, and Brent is trading at about US$87.68-88.52 a barrel. For a Thai SME, expect continued pressure on diesel, bunker and freight costs and possible supplier surcharges. Review fuel and shipping budgets now, and check whether key imports or raw materials route through the Gulf.

Three listed car-title lenders (MTC, SAWAD, SAK) reported higher H1 2026 net profit. MTC's loan book grew about 8% YoY to 188,699 mn baht with NPL at 2.61%, and it expects about 10% loan growth in H2. SAWAD's financing costs fell 9% YoY and it cut operating expenses, and it expects strong demand for car-title loans in H2. SAK's loan book was flat, but farm-linked car-title and solar loans grew. For SMEs, this signals that credit to vehicle-owning borrowers is loosening and cheaper for lenders to fund, which may matter if you finance vehicles or use car-title loans for working capital. No direct action is required.

Mortgage reject rate for housing loans reached 44.9% in H1 2026, up from 39.8% a year earlier, with mid and upper-range homes hit hardest (over 7m baht at 35.7%, up 9.4 points). Developers report transfers slowing and "self-rejection" (buyers dropping out) rising to 40-50% of cancelled transfers. Industry backlog is about 185 billion baht. If you supply, subcontract or lend to property developers, check their payment terms and cash position; if you sell to home buyers, expect longer approval times and plan for buyers who fail credit checks.

The Meteorological Department expects heavy to very heavy rain across the North and upper Northeast from Tuesday to Friday, with flash-flood and runoff risk in foothill communities, waterside areas and low-lying districts. Low-lying roads may flood briefly, so plan delivery routes and move stock off the floor in vulnerable premises. Sea conditions also worsen Wednesday to Friday: waves of 2-3 metres in the upper Andaman Sea, over 3 metres during thunderstorms, and around 2 metres in the upper Gulf. Small boats in the upper Andaman should stay ashore, and operators should avoid stormy areas.

Anthropic says it now embeds watermarks in AI-generated text and files, partly to meet the EU AI Act. The watermark uses word and phrase patterns rather than hidden characters, so it does not change output quality or token costs. Editing the text reduces or removes the mark, and AI-written code carries very little. A future API will let others check whether text came from AI. For a Thai business, there is no action needed now; if you publish AI-drafted content, know that it may be detectable.

NVIDIA raised the web list price of its RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell workstation GPU to $16,000 (about 530,000 baht), up 20% from $13,250 in June and nearly double the $8,565 launch price in March 2025. For a Thai SME buying high-end workstations or GPU servers for design, video, AI or engineering work, hardware budgets set earlier will likely not cover current prices. Re-check quotes before committing, and consider whether cloud rental or extending existing equipment is cheaper for now.
