Two Tak Bai police investigators were killed and three wounded on Sunday during a drug search at a palm plantation hut in Ban Bueng Chalam, tambon Phrai Wan. The gunman, armed with an M16, remains at large and the area has been sealed off as a danger zone. For businesses in Tak Bai and nearby districts, expect road checkpoints, closed access to plantation areas, and possible disruption to movement and deliveries while the search continues.

The Bank of Thailand says Q2 2026 slowed because of higher energy prices and fewer tourists from the Middle East and Europe. Hotels and restaurants saw activity fall, and private consumption weakened as living costs rose. Q3 trade may stay firm only temporarily, supported by government handouts (Thai Chuay Thai Plus and the state welfare card). Tourism-linked businesses are expected to shrink further. The 2026 growth forecast is 2.3%. For a small business, plan for softer tourist-area demand, higher energy and input costs, and short-lived stimulus-driven sales.

The Transport Ministry plans to submit the 308 km Chira–Ubon Ratchathani double-track rail project, budgeted at 44,095 million baht across 34 stations and four provinces (Buriram, Surin, Si Saket, Ubon), to the Cabinet. Construction is expected to start in 2571 (2028) and finish in 2575 (2032). Nothing changes for a small business this year; the value is in knowing that freight and logistics costs in the lower Isan corridor may improve over the long term. Watch for Cabinet approval as the next signal.

The Finance Ministry spokesperson says about 800,000 holders of the 2026 State Welfare Card have not completed electronic identity verification (e-KYC). The Interior Ministry will go to the areas with verification equipment, and the 2026 benefits are expected to be usable from 1 October. For a small business, this matters if staff or customers in your area hold these cards: help them complete e-KYC before October. The article also flags that some people were used as "mule" account holders, so do not let anyone open accounts or sign documents on your behalf for pay. The energy-transition loan scheme is expected in August, with the medium-term fiscal plan revised in November-December.

The National Health Security Office (NHSO) secretary-general says hospitals with high patient volumes should receive budget support, and that hospitals' push for funding based on their deficits needs balancing. On the political idea of making gold-card (UC) patients co-pay more, he noted that fixed per-visit fees already exist under law, and warned that higher charges could make patients uncertain about costs, as before the 30-baht scheme. No new rule or deadline was announced. For a Thai SME owner this is background: watch for any co-pay change, since it would affect employee health costs and customer spending on care.

The Finance Ministry's first Plus savings bond issue (2 billion baht; 3-year at 1.8%, 10-year at 2.8%) sold out in 21 seconds on the Paotang wallet app on 31 July. The next round of 2 billion baht opens 3-5 Aug 2026, 08.30-15.00, through 24 banks and securities firms, and via Bond Connect. Small-lot-first allocation: Thai individuals with a securities trading account can order from 1,000 baht with no upper limit, but only one order per person. Allocation and refunds are announced 6 Aug. The ministry says bonds will be issued monthly. For an owner with spare cash, this is a low-risk government savings option to consider; you need a securities account and must place the order quickly during the window.

The National Water Resources Office says the Chao Phraya flood-relief canal projects (Chai Nat-Pak Sak-Gulf of Thailand floodway, Bang Ban-Bang Sai canal about 60% done) are being pushed, with financing via NESDC loans still under study. Budget for 2027 was cut and analyst staffing is thin. Hadyai's drainage was upgraded to about 1,200 cubic metres per second, and the focus is shifting to early warning and evacuation. For a Thai SME in Ayutthaya, Singburi, Ang Thong or Hadyai, no immediate action is required, but flood-risk planning (stock elevation, insurance, evacuation routes) is worth reviewing this year.

The Department of Land Transport has opened public comment on a draft ministerial rule barring combustion-engine tuk-tuks from inner Bangkok, especially around the Grand Palace and historic sites, with exceptions only for EVs and time windows set by traffic police. Operators say nearly all inner-city tuk-tuks already run on LPG, so the air-pollution case is weak. Drivers say most still owe loans on their vehicles (about 7-8 lakh baht including interest), and EV rental runs about 700 baht a day. If you run a tuk-tuk, transport, or tourism-linked business in these zones, watch the final rule and its timing, and consider submitting comments during the consultation.

A logistics expert says the Korat-Nong Khai section (about 347,000 million baht) could reach 500,000 million baht with rolling stock and systems, and still needs cargo transshipment to trucks at the Lao border because the new Mekong bridge plan is unclear. The tender for this phase is targeted for December 2026. For an SME, this is a long-term signal: do not plan cross-border cargo savings from this rail link yet. Keep using current truck and border routes in your logistics budget.

Reports say the Finance Ministry has proposed cutting the TISA tax-deduction cap to 600,000 baht a year, down from 800,000, and dropping the income-based multiplier (1.3x for incomes up to 1.5 million, 0.7x above). The deputy finance minister says the scheme is still under consideration and must go to the cabinet, with a target of September 2026. TISA would also allow direct investment in stocks and debt instruments to get the tax deduction. Owners and staff planning retirement or tax savings should wait for the final cabinet decision before changing plans.

The Thai Meteorological Department says Typhoon Dolphin will not enter Thailand directly and rumours online are wrong. Its indirect effect could still strengthen the south-westerly monsoon, bringing heavy to very heavy rain to the North and upper Northeast from 7 to 9 August. If your business operates in those areas, plan for flash floods, forest run-off and river overflow, and follow official TMD forecasts rather than social media posts.

European airlines including KLM, British Airways, Lufthansa and Air Canada have suspended Gulf and Middle East routes until roughly August to October 2026, and direct flights into Thailand are filling up. Thai Airways launched Bangkok-Amsterdam on 1 July 2026 and plans more flights to Paris, Munich and Zurich later this year. TAT still targets 10.4 million long-haul visitors this year, down from 10.8 million, with the Middle East market about 30% down. For tourism-linked SMEs, Europe and Americas demand looks firm into the coming season, and the Middle East shortfall is the main gap.

A Trat cosmetics exporter lost over 50% of sales when the Cambodia border closed. Shipping by sea via Laem Chabang took up to 2 months, and the land route through Laos now faces higher tariffs and fuel costs. Sales have recovered about 10%. Its Indonesia OEM business is growing, with orders booked to October, but Indonesia requires halal certification on all imported and locally made cosmetics from January 2027. If you export to CLMV or Indonesia, check your freight routes and halal status now, and confirm that buyers' cost increases will not stop orders.

The US Supreme Court ruled in February that Trump-era import tariffs were unlawful, and Amazon has received about US$600m (roughly 20 billion baht) in refunds. Amazon says it will refund customers directly where it can trace tariff surcharges, and will reinvest the rest in keeping prices low. Third-party sellers, who make up over 60% of Amazon's marketplace sales, have also filed for refunds. For a Thai SME, this matters only if you export to the US or sell through Amazon US: check whether you paid US tariffs on goods you imported, and whether your marketplace price or surcharge was passed on to US buyers. Otherwise there is no direct action for Thai businesses.

The government says the Thai Help Thai Plus 60/40 scheme has run two months (to 31 July 2026) with 86,442.6 million baht spent, 26 million participants and 1.19 million checked shops. The state covers 60% of eligible food, drink, goods and services, capped at 200 baht per person per day and 1,000 baht per person per month. Unused monthly allowance does not roll over. Eligible users can spend until 30 September 2026. Shops already in Khon Larueng Plus or newly registered through Krungthai can join; 96.6% of spending went through ordinary shops and 3.4% through food delivery apps. Shop owners should check registration and plan for customer traffic before the deadline. The article gives no detail on payment timing to shops.

The US is making its visa bond programme permanent from August 3, 2026. Consular officers can require B-1 business and B-2 tourist applicants from 50 listed countries to post a bond of US$10,000, US$15,000 or US$20,000. Thailand is not on the list; Cambodia is, and Bangladesh, Nepal, Mongolia and Georgia are too. Thai businesses are not directly affected, but Thai staff or partners who are nationals of listed countries should expect this when travelling to the US. The bond is the only new cost; the US$5,000 option has been dropped.

A Thai woman spent 20 days in Japanese custody after unknowingly carrying a parcel with crystal methamphetamine hidden in coffee sachets. She was recruited via Line and paid to carry goods. Police say the network used Thai bank accounts and a delivery app. For a business owner: never carry or ship sealed packages for anyone else, and treat unusual job offers with translated-sounding messages as a red flag. Also watch that your own bank accounts are not rented out to others for transfers.

The cabinet-level committee chaired by Deputy PM Pakorn Nilprapunt says the Electricity Generating Authority can now renegotiate long-term private power purchase contracts (the "eternal contracts", 50-year terms) without going back to cabinet, after the national energy policy committee approved it on 17 July 2026. The current purchase base is about 2.16 baht per unit, and officials say some generation costs have fallen. Availability Payment rules are still under review with no date set. No change to your bill yet; watch for the Availability Payment decision and the revised PDP, since both feed into electricity tariffs your business pays.

Water in the Mae Sai river is forecast to rise back to bank level around 08.00 on 2 August 2026, though not overflow, after heavy rain in Myanmar and 133–163 mm on the Thai side. Water may seep through embankments into riverside areas such as Ban Hua Fai, Sai Lom Joy and Koh Sai, and drainage will be slow. The Office of National Water Resources warns of flash floods and landslides in many provinces on 2–4 August, with heavier rain expected 3–7 August. For shops, stock and vehicles in low riverside areas of Mae Sai, move goods to higher ground now and check routes and supply deliveries.

Thailand's Foreign Ministry disputed a UN special rapporteur's end-of-mission statement on the Thai-Cambodian conflict, including figures on displaced people and Cambodian migrant workers returning from Thailand. It says Thailand is ready to rebuild relations if Cambodia cooperates, and points to the Joint Statement of December 27, 2025. For a small business, there is no direct action required. Watch for possible effects on border trade or migrant worker supply if tensions change, but nothing needs to change in your plans now.
